چکیده

Local climate and environment broadly affect the deuterium/hydrogen (D/H) ratios of plant materials, however the degree to which an individual plant’s leaf waxes D/H ratios are affected by these parameters remains in question. Understanding these issues is particularly important in order to reconstruct past floral transitions and changes in the paleohydrologic cycle. For this study, we sampled five co-occurring tree species, Acer rubrum , Platanus occidentalis , Juniperus virginiana , Pinus taeda , and Pinus strobus and soils at forty sites along the East Coast of the US, from Florida to Maine. Hydrogen isotopic compositions of leaf wax n-alkanes, stem and surface waters were analyzed and compared against high-resolution temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, and vapor pressure deficit data to determine environmental controls on isotopic composition. Our results demonstrate that each tree species produce a unique distribution of n-alkanes with distinct chain length pattern. Average n-alkane chain lengths recovered from soils, A. rubrum , and J. virginiana leaves show significant correlations with mean annual temperature. dD values of A. rubrum leaf n-alkanes were strongly correlated to modeled mean annual precipitation dD values and other climate parameters related to latitude (i.e. temperature, relative humidity, vapor pressure deficit), while the dD values of J. virginiana n-alkanes were not. Differences in correspondence may reflect the timing of leaf wax synthesis between the two species. Further, soil n-alkane D/H compositions were strongly correlated to modeled mean annual precipitation dD values, while the apparent hydrogen isotopic fractionation was not. These findings indicate that the isotope ratio of n-alkanes from soils in Eastern North American forests and similar ecosystems likely represents a time-averaged value that smooth out the environmental influence any one plant experiences. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Leaf-wax n-alkanes record the plant-water environment at leaf flush.

Leaf-wax n-alkanes (2)H/(1)H ratios are widely used as a proxy in climate reconstruction. Although the broad nature of the relationship between n-alkanes δ(2)H values and climate is appreciated, the quantitative details of the proxy remain elusive. To examine these details under natural environmental conditions, we studied a riparian broadleaf angiosperm species, Populus angustifolia, growing o...

Evaluation of broadleaf weeds control with some post-emergence herbicides in maize (Zea mays L.) in Iran

Registered dose of herbicides may be higher than rate required for controlling weed species depending on growth stages. In order to study the effect of individual post-emergence application of 2,4-D plus MCPA and three sulfonylurea herbicides at four- to six-true leaf stage of weeds, experiments were conducted in 2011 at the greenhouse of Agricultural Faculty of Ferdowsi University of Mashh...

Comparison of Machine Learning Algorithms for Broad Leaf Species Classification Using UAV-RGB Images

Abstract: Knowing the tree species combination of forests provides valuable information for studying the forest’s economic value, fire risk assessment, biodiversity monitoring, and wildlife habitat improvement. Fieldwork is often time-consuming and labor-required, free satellite data are available in coarse resolution and the use of manned aircraft is relatively costly. Recently, unmanned aeria...

Multiscale modeling of spring phenology across Deciduous Forests in the Eastern United States.

Phenological events, such as bud burst, are strongly linked to ecosystem processes in temperate deciduous forests. However, the exact nature and magnitude of how seasonal and interannual variation in air temperatures influence phenology is poorly understood, and model-based phenology representations fail to capture local- to regional-scale variability arising from differences in species composi...

A test of detecting spring leaf ̄ ush within the Alaskan boreal forest using ERS-2 and Radarsat SAR data

This study tests whether ERS-2 and Radarsat Standard Beam SAR data could be used to detect spring green-up of broadleaf forests on ̄ oodplains in interior Alaska. SAR data were acquired for preand post-budburst dates during the spring of 1997, 1998 and 1999. The images were radiometrically calibrated todB and then geometrically co-registered to a colour infrared Landsat TM image. Ten broadleaf ...
